She was born into one of the most influential families of Virginia, cousin to Generals Johnston and Pickett, related to Patrick Henry, James Madison and officers in all of Virginia’s wars. An aristocrat, she helped found the United Daughters of the Confederacy, yet had a very public feud with Stonewall Jackson’s widow. Her books were hugely successful, yet politics destroyed her career and her name and reputation faded into the mists of her Blue Ridge Mountains.
